The Bio4Fuels Network
Organisations shaping sustainable biofuels
The Bio4Fuels network builds on an existing collaboration between research partners, aiming to focus on all aspects of the value chain from sustainable bio-based feedstocks to renewable transportation fuels, together with a wide network of research institutions, industry actors and stakeholders.
Targets / aims
Bio4Fuels aims to promote research, development and implementation of innovative technologies and support industries to realize economic and sustainable conversion of sustainable biomass and other sustainable carbon feedstocks to transportation fuels and related value chemicals, heat and power.
Key focus areas
Promoting research activities addressing specific challenges the different value chains; dissemination and promotion of knowledge within the scientific and an public community, providing sustainability and techno-economic insights for technologies and value.
Stakeholders
Bio4Fuels brings together leading Norwegian research institutions and Universities, Key European research institutes, National and European Industries, National and Regional authorities and NGOs.
Advancing Sustainable Fuels for transport sector
Bio4Fuels builds on the platform established in the period 2017 – 2025 through its 9 year funding period as one of the Research Council’s National Centres for Environmentally Friendly Energy research (FME Bio4Fuels).
Bringing together 7 of the leading Research Institutes and Universities, SINTEF and NMBU’s co-leadership established an extensive platform of knowledge, results, expertise and research infrastructure available for continued research and innovation on the major challenges and bottlenecks for establishing commercial scale value chains.

Events & Activities
Follow Bio4Fuels events, webinars, meetings and knowledge-sharing activities where research, industry and stakeholders come together.
IEA Bioenergy Task 39: “Biofuels to decarbonize transport”
As Norway’s representative in IEA Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Programme Task 39, Bio4Fuels has contributed to a recent country report highlighting the current status, developments, and opportunities for biofuels in Norway.
This webinar offers a unique opportunity to explore the key findings, understand Norway’s role in the international collaboration, and discuss how sustainable fuels can accelerate the decarbonization of the transport sector.
With Tomas Ekbom (IEA Bioenergy Magazine), Judit Sandquist and Nicholas I. Canabarro (both SINTEF), Ruben Schulkes (Equinor) og Martine Mørk (ZERO).
SAF technologies and potential for implementation in Norway
With Europe’s 2030 target of 6% blending of SAF in aviation fuel only 4 years away, the need for implementing sustainable solutions has never been greater. LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology aims at producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure, and scalable to meet global demand.
We are proud to welcomeDaniel Bloch, Director of Strategic Partnerships at LanzaJet, who will introduce their technology and share their insights on how SAF can accelerate aviation’s transition toward net‑zero emissions.
To place this in a Norwegian context, Matteo Gilardi, Research Scientist SINTEF Industry, and Vedant Ballal, PhD Candidate,Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), will present results from Bio4Fuels; highlighting the potential of establishing the full SAF value chain in Norway, covering technological pathways, economic opportunities, and climate impact.
Mapping Available Domestic, Sustainable Norwegian Biomass for energy Production
With Tønnes Thompson (Stakeholder) and Per Kristian Rørstad (Norwegian University of Life Sciences, NMBU)
Green CO2 - legal and policy frameworks
With Invild Ombudstvedt (IOM Law), Helene N. Godhavn and Thea Johnsen (both Norwegian Environment Agency)
Development of outlook for the necessary means to build industrial capacity for drop-in advanced biofuels
With Maria Georgiadou (European Commision), Martine Mørk (ZERO), Kjell Moljord (Equinor), and Joakim Sværen (Silva Green Fuel).
